I bolted down the street to my flat, fumbled for my keys, thinking I should see Bethany soon, that she should be waiting outside. But maybe someone had let her in and she was waiting outside my room. I ran up the stairs and unlocked my door. She wasn’t here. So where was she? I picked up my phone and dialled the number she had called from. I heard it ringing behind me. “Bethany!” I sighed in relief spinning around.

But it wasn’t Bethany who was behind me in my room, slamming the door shut. It was Shane, and he looked meaner and uglier than I remembered.

“Where’s Bethany?”” I yelled. “What have you done with her?”

He paced towards me, slapped the phone out of my hand, caught me by the wrist and yanked my arm round my back so hard it felt like it was being wrenched out of its socket.

“She’s fine, but she sent me to give you a message from her and Yvonne.”

I opened my mouth to scream but Shane clamped his big slimy hand over it and silenced me. He lowered his stale breathed mouth to my ear and whispered, “You leave us alone. We are a proper family now. Don’t go talking to no teachers, no do-gooders, or anyone else. If you try and contact us, or her, or anyone we know, then I’ll come back and hurt you worse.”

“Bully!” I muffled into his hand.

I heard him hiss as he pushed me down on to the floor. I kicked and punched and wriggled and squirmed and tried everything I could to get free, but he had pinned me down. I was trapped. I was panicking. I couldn’t breathe.

Then suddenly the door crashed open and in piled the big threatening frame of David. He pulled Shane off of me and started to punch him but Shane could give as good as he got. He was big too, and he could punch as hard as any man. Then, as I pulled myself up, from the corner of my eye I saw something glint in Shane’s right hand.

“It’s a knife.”

I heard the words I was thinking being whispered into my ear, loud and clear. John the Ghost was here too.

“We’ve got to act fast,” John said. “I’ll spook him, and you grab the knife.”

I rushed forward and threw myself on Shane’s back, grappling for his arm. From out of nowhere there was a rush of cold air, followed by the sudden materialisation of what could only be described as the face of a demon. It had horns, and snakes like Medusa coming from its head, hissing and screeching like demented devils. Its eyes were black and hollow with tiny pricks of red light in the centre. And its huge cavernous mouth howled in a wild and grating wail, showing off long, rough blackened teeth.

Shane saw it too, and at the sight of the horrifying demon I felt him physically tremble like a frightened weasel, stopping him in his tirade of violence.
